This unique house
features colored concrete walls for the 1st
floor. The walls are well insulated, air-tight,
and virtually maintenance free. The house
features a variety of high performance building
products, including a small tankless water
heater, that provides all of the hot water
needed to heat the entire house and for domestic
use. The house received an ENERGY STAR®
rating of 90.8, or 54% above code.
Like
most BPC homes, this house is aligned to solar
south with windows that permit good solar
gain. The house has insulated concrete floors
finished with tile. In the winter, the sun's
heat is stored in the floors for redistribution
at night.
For
the upstairs kids' bath, a simple upgrade to a custom cabinet greatly improves
the room. The light above the vanity is fluorescent and uses roughly 25% of the
energy used by an incandescent fixture. The quality of the light in fluorescent
fixtures has improved recently, and electronic ballasts allow the lights to turn
on instantly, without flickering.
The
dining room features three double-hung windows that face south for solar gain
and natural light. The tile floors are warmed by the sun and by radiant tubing
embedded in the floors for superior comfort. Hard surface flooring is a good choice
for individuals with allergies and asthma.
This
small space under the stair landing has been reserved for visiting children.
The
kitchen features low toxicity cabinetry covered in melamine for ease of cleaning.
The countertops are Vermont slate tile over a special engineered wood substrate
selected for its low toxicity. Toxicity is often an issue with the adhesives used
in engineered wood.
The
living room and dining room are separated by a U-shaped staircase with an open
railing on either side. The staircase separates the main living spaces while preserving
the sight lines from one room to the other, which enhances the sense of space
in a house of modest size.
