This
home was built by its owner with BPC acting
as a consultant. BPC reduced heating and cooling
equipment sizes, by air sealing, using continuous
ventilation, and increasing insulation
levels with minimal
cost increase to the owner. The home exceeds
ENERGY STAR® base requirements by 20%.
The owner will enjoy
being able to control winter humidity in the
home without a humidifier while still saving
over $1,000 per year in energy costs versus
a comparable sized home.

A
hydro air system heats and cools the home, consisting
of a high-efficiency oil-fired hot water boiler
with a dedicated combustion air source, high-efficiency
condensers for cooling, and air handlers for heating
and cooling air delivery. An indirect hot water
storage tank connected to the boiler provides a
high-efficiency domestic hot water systems.
An Energy Recovery Ventilator
(ERV) allow for continuous air changes with outdoors,
while saving 70% of the exhaust air's energy. All
mechanical equipment has been located within the
thermal envelope to prevent unneccessary losses,
typical of most homes built today.

The
home's basement while unfinished has been made part
of the conditioned space by air sealing and insulating
below the slab and at the foundation wall eliminating
the need to insulate the ductwork or floor, providing
the owner with an enourmous climate controlled area
for storage.
